Love learning and making new friends!

Why do you like LanguaFriend?

My tutor has taught me how to speak like a native and has become one of my closest friends.” - David M.

Who We Are

We are friends who love learning each other’s languages. It is a joy and honor to share our hearts, our dreams, our hopes, our lives with one another.

How It Works

Take Your First Step

  1. Try out your first tutor by sending a WhatsApp message to the coordinator saying when you are available for a lesson.

  2. Schedule your first lesson. Your coordinator will connect you to an available tutor.

  3. Share real life with each other, talking about your day and learning how to speak in your new language.

  4. Review your new words before your next lesson. Your tutor will send you a recording of your lesson on WhatsApp.

  5. Give back an appropriate gift. The coordinator will message you the electronic method preferred to receive gifts (e.g., Paypal, Venmo, Wise, Western Union, etc).

  6. Feel full freedom to try out a different tutor if preferred for your style or schedule. You can reach out to the coordinator at any time to switch tutors.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The goal of most language learning websites is to make money. However, our goal is to make friends. Money is useful, but friends are worth more. LanguaFriend seeks to connect real people in real places to share real life. We are excited to welcome you into our community!

  • Currently, 80% of your gift goes to your tutor. The remaining 20% covers the cost of this website and the coordinator’s work. Once we have enough students, our plan is that 90% goes to your tutor and 10% covers the overhead.

  • We encourage students to give their tutors a 24 hour notice prior to cancellation. If you need to cancel within 24 hours, we recommend you still give a gift to your tutor for the time he or she set aside to meet with you. This honors their time and helps them stay devoted to teaching you.

  • Yes, there are LanguaFriend tutors who love to teach children! You can find this information next to their picture. We require parents to supervise these sessions (at least be in the same room) for the sake of the student’s safety and the tutor’s reputation.

  • Our tutors are trained in three methods and you as the student can choose which method works best for you. Or, you can ask your tutor to choose which method he or she believes would work best for you. You can switch to a different method at anytime.

Traditional Method: Starting with the Alphabet and Sounds, you learn like most school-aged students learn languages in their educational classes. The methodology is to understand the basics of the language by using its building blocks. Then, through simple conversations you will slowly add more words and concepts to your understanding.

GPA (Growing Participatory Approach): Starting with pictures of commonly used items (e.g. in the house, on the street, at the office), you assimilate the language into your brain through repetition of the sounds. This is similar to the way an infant or toddler learns from family members. The goal is to *get a feel* for what sounds right in certain situations because you heard it many times.

Curriculum: Your tutor uses a professionally-made curriculum to walk you through the language in a systematic way. The goal is to understand the grammar, phonics, reading, and writing.

Whichever method you prefer, the end goal is the same— that you, the student, would be able to understand and speak the language fluently and make friends while doing so.
